Project Spotlight - Seven Oaks on the Ridge

Integral Lighting Photo ContestOver the eight years that Estate Gardeners Inc. out of Elkhorn, NE has been working at Seven Oaks on the Ridge, the acreage in the Ponca Hills of North Omaha has matured as a wildlife habitat for deer, wild turkeys, and as home for Amy Scott and her family.  There are 52 acres of forest, hills, meadows, prairie, and a creek which runs through it.  Until 8 years ago, there were also piles of discarded tires, oil cans and garbage, noxious weeds and rampaging poison ivy.

Over the eight year evolution of the project, meticulous research and investigation into environmental impact was done by the landscape designer in advance of each phase of work.  Initial preparations included working with local, state, federal agencies, from the city council to county planners, Natural Resources District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, wetlands and wildlife preservation experts, utilities operators, and surrounding landowners.

There are two large ponds that are each about 1/4 acre and lined with Bentonite.  A pump, which recirculates over 400 GPM, pushes water from Ponca Creek up a 60 foot elevation change and a distance of over 300 feet to the top of a roaring waterfall which tumbles down to the upper pond.  The water from this pond spills over an earthen dam down another waterfall into the lower pond and finally over a small falls back into the creek.

Over 500 tons of stone were used in the water features, walls, outcroppings, stairs and paths.  The ponds are stocked with catfish, striper, bluegill, and bass.  The plantings were also chosen to provide habitat for many species of wildlife.  Over six acres of fields and meadows were seeded with over 50 varieties of native wildflowers and prairie grasses, providing bird food and nesting material, bedding for deer, as well as cover for small mammals, pheasant and grouse.  Nearly 200 trees were added, more than 50 required a 90" spade.  90% of the landscape is self sustaining, requiring no fertilization or irrigation.

The project, submitted in the $500,000-and-over category, won the grand prize award this year in the 40th annual Environmental Improvement Awards Program of PLANET (Professional Landcare Network) based in Herdon, VA.  Michael Becker of Estate Gardeners is an active member of PLANET and is also Landscape Industry Certified through PLANET.  Landscape Industry Certified is the certification mark awarded by PLANET and represents evidence of the industry's highest standards of landscape professionalism.  Fewer than 1% of all landscape professionals have achieved this type of certification.

Irrigation System Winterizing Tips

It is that time of year that many of you are starting your turn offs and blow outs for your irrigation customers.  Here are some tips and reminders when winterizing your clients irrigation systems.

- When using the Blow Out method, use an air compressor with a Cubic Foot per Minute (CFM) rating of 80-100 for any mainline of 2" or less

- Attach the compressor to the mainline via a quick coupler, hose bib or other type of connection that is located AFTER the Backflow device.  Compressed air should NOT be blown through any Backflow device.

- Close the Backflow isolation valves and start with the zone that is the highest in elevation and furthest from the compressor.

- Never exceed 80 PSI when blowing out an irrigation system.  The recommended pressure is 60 PSI.  Anything higher than 80 PSI can damage the components of the irrigation system.

- Each zone should be activated until no water can be seen exiting the heads.  It is better to use 2 or 3 short cycles than one long one.

- Once station is dry, you should not continue to blow air through the pipe.  Compressed air moving through dry pipes can cause friction, which will create heat and the heat could cause damage.

- Leave the ball valves and drains on the Backflow preventer at a 45 degree angle.

- Turn the controller to the OFF position.  This will keep the controller from activating the solenoids in the field.
