JULY 2010

Greetings!

July is Smart Irrigation Month. We're supporting this important industry initiative with the latest smart products and information that can help you grow your business.

Many of the irrigation systems installed over the last 20 years are now considered obsolete.  They waste water with inefficient sprinkler heads, poor uniformity and poorly managed timer controls.

By applying smart practices and new technology, you can help your customers reduce their water bills and be more eco-friendly in their watering habits.

Ask us how your company can benefit from smart irrigation every month.

Professionals Take Time to Educate

A Minute with MikeJuly is Smart Irrigation Month; this is a great opportunity take a national initiative right to your customer's doorstep.  The irrigation industry is in the lead regarding how to conserve, regulate, and use our precious water resources.  This is an exciting thing, and everyone should leverage the opportunity.

Taking advantage of this initiative requires one very important step...educating your customer. You are going to have to explain what Smart Irrigation Month is, why it's important, and show the newer products that truly conserve water.  YOU are the professional; your customer is relying on YOU to tell them everything they need to know.  This is a tremendous opportunity, and a tremendous responsibility.

Being a professional, whether you are in irrigation, landscaping, water features, or a combination of them all, results in an expectation that you know more than the average customer.  Your customer expects you, as a professional, to educate them on the products you use and how it best benefits them.  Most of your customers are not looking for long presentations, but they do want information.  We are a society of information.

While educating your customer about various products and initiatives, you also must educate them on all the services YOU can provide the customer.  Do not assume they know your business, YOU are the professional and it's your job to educate them.  Many companies have diversified their offering over the last couple of years, but how many of your companies know that you know install and service: irrigation, landscape lighting, outdoor kitchens, drainage, water features, etc.

Outdoor living is still the hottest trend going.  Your customers look at home and garden magazines and think, "Wow...that looks great, where would I start?"

Landscaping needs irrigation, hardscapes need lighting, outdoor kitchens and fire pits are for entertaining, the list goes on.  You have a great opportunity to educate in all these areas.

How would you grade yourself in educating your customers, in all aspects?  Do they understand the benefit and savings they could realize by upgrading their irrigation system to a more efficient one?  Are they aware that you have expanded your business and provide them with everything from "fixing" that wet spot in the backyard with some drainage solutions to installing the outdoor kitchen and living area they have been dreaming of?

The proverbial trunk-slammer is not a professional... you are.  As a professional you have opportunities and responsibilities. REAMS is here to help you with both.

Thank you for your continued business.
-Mike

Tip from Ron: Retrofit Your Way to Profits

RonIn challenging times, you can prosper by finding new ways to create revenue.

Our biggest opportunity in the current market is customers with existing irrigation systems.   By undoing the inefficiencies of poor design and installation that plague so many older systems, you can help your customers save water and grow your business in the process.

Here are some easy examples of water-saving retrofits:

Problem: Rotors and sprays mixed on the same zone. Solution: Retrofit sprays to rotary nozzles.

Problem: Turf build-up overtaking aging sprinkler heads, coverage problems. Solution: Upgrade heads, correct layout issues.

Problem: Broken risers leading to water waste. Solution: Switch heads to high-pops that disappear from view.

Problem: Homeowners don't understand how to set the controller, and don't change watering times per zone in season. Solution: Self-adjusting controllers can reduce total use up to 25%.

Tap into these opportunities by developing a company-wide push toward marketing efficiency:

  • Train your service technicans to identify need for improvements and sell them to the homeowner.
  • Follow-up with homeowners with poor systems by phone and mail. Go back after spring start-ups are over to address key concerns.
  • Ask customers about their water bills. Customers that have high bills are targets for system improvements.

Helping your customers make their systems more efficient will save water, protect the reputation of our industry and most importantly, generate profits from additional sales.

Why Consider Aeration for Your Customer's Pond or Lake?

Oxygen sustains life, even in a lake or pond.  Proper aeration promotes the overall health of the entire ecosystem.

Common reasons for adding Kasco aeration products to a lake or pond include:

  • Greater densities of fish can be achieved as well as better growth rates for those fish.
  • Water quality as well as odors can be improved and controlled
  • Algae blooms and die-offs are less severe.
  • Organic muck decomposition on the pond bottom can be accelerated.
  • Algae can potentially be controlled.

Proper aeration is an insurance policy to protect your customers' investments in the health of their pond and its fish.  Plus it improves the aesthetics of the pond as well.

REAMS is your complete source for all Kasco pond management products including diffused air aeration, aerating fountains, decorative fountains and water circulators.  Check out the full range of solutions at www.KascoMarine.com   Then ask us about sizing a solution and pricing for your application.
