A Minute with Mike

image
I'd like for you to take a minute and reflect on how you felt the day you picked up your new calling cards that said - Tom Johnson, Owner; ABC Landscape and Irrigation.  How long did you stare at the first card you pulled out of the box with that funny smile of satisfaction on your face?  If you were like me, it was for several minutes.  You finally had done it, you now own your own business.

Now, let's speed forward to today.  Is that smile of satisfaction still there?  Do you still have the passion for what you are doing?  Is everything working out like you had planned it?  Have you reaped the rewards of success or have you just kept your head above water?  Before you start answering these questions, let's reflect on why you started up you own business in the first place.

People start up their own business for several reasons, but two of the best are: (1) You have always wanted to be an entrepreneur.  You have some innovative ideas and a great business plan to go with them.  OR  (2) You are tired of doing all the work for the guy who is making all the money, and you're getting nowhere soon.  I think I'll become an entrepreneur.

The key to the success of the first reason is the "Great Business Plan".  He plans to not only work in his business, but also work on his business.  Now, whether the plan is really "great" or not, is irreverent.  The important fact is that there is a plan.  A well written plan is a road map for the future and helps to smooth out the pot holes along the way.  Sometimes a detour occurs, but the road map is still there as a guide to maintain the passion for success.

The key to the success of the second reason is that he's the hardest working guy in the area, a great technician.  His only plan is to out hustle and out work the competition.  He plans to be the main man and reap all the rewards himself.  (Yes, he turns into his old boss).  Hard work is definitely one of the major keys to success, but without a true business plan for the future, early burn out is common and the passion for business ownership is exchanged for owning a job.

Is it too late to put together a business plan or revise an outdated one?  Heck no.  REAMS has been helping contractors succeed for the last 32 years.  Many contractors revisit their road map yearly with our help.  REAMS has the TEAM members to be your number one resource for business guidance as well as quality products.  Our 2008 MVP Program is another key example how we plan to assist you in keeping your company on the road to success.  Be sure to get with the Program.  Thanks for being a MVP player on the REAMS TEAM........Mike

Pricing Issues

The irrigation and landscape business continues to be affected by the highly speculative petroleum industry.  As the price at the pump continues to climb, many of our manufacturers are passing on their increase in production and delivery costs onto the consumer.

REAMS number one goal as your primary irrigation and landscape supplier is to keep our customers informed and profitable.  As soon as we are notified by a specific manufacturer or industry of a price increase, we will let you know.

When bidding projects that are six months to a year away, please contact your local REAMS representative to discuss price or discount options that can be agreed to by our local manufacturer representatives.  When we work together we all win.

Your REAMS Team.
