If you listen to the people who allegedly "know everything", 2009 is going to be filled with so much uncertainty it may not even be worth getting out of bed. In many circles, 2009 has already been written-off, and the focus is on 2010. The issue I take with this line of thought is two-fold. 1.) There is still plenty I am certain of for 2009. 2.) Whether the "recovery" of everything might not happen until 2010, we've got 12 months before it comes, and we can't just sit around and wait for it.
To be fair, there is plenty that is uncertain in 2009, but when is that not the case? We deal with uncertainty everyday, 2009 will be no different.
The big story is the economy. This affects our industry from the construction side of things, residential and commercial, and consumer confidence in spending money on their current homes or businesses. Regarding construction, it really comes down to what is happening in your own town. What is happening nationally doesn't always equate to what is happening locally.
For consumers, the stock market seems to be leveling out; this may give a little peace of mind when it comes to figuring out where they stand financially. Deciding to invest in one's home or business is easier to do if you feel like you won't lose another 50% of your portfolio in the next few days. There are still plenty of consumers with money to spend, but we need the purse strings to loosen a bit.
The other bit of uncertainty we will all face in 2009 is the weather. This factor is bigger than all others. We can't control the weather; however, we need to be prepared to handle whatever it offers us. Can the weather be as fickle as it was in 2008? Of course it can, but I sure hope it is much kinder to us this year.
Enough with 'uncertainty', let's look at what we should all be certain of. We should be certain of our abilities, decisions, and actions. What worked last year? What didn't? What needs action? If action is needed, get an action plan in place. Be certain of what direction you are going, and be certain of your abilities to navigate whatever comes your way.

There are many things we cannot control, but never lose sight of what you can control. We will all face the "uncertainty" of 2009 together, whatever the year brings. Don't lose faith, 2009 may be the best year ever. Don't think so? Well you never know. I am certain of that....Bryce
